Saturday was one week! George and Henry are officially one week old! #fathersday #twinslife #nicu

Saturday was one week! George and Henry are officially one week old! Sarah and I were able to give them a bath for the first time, and I truly cherished this moment. There was nothing more gratifying than capturing this moment in time, documenting this milestone, watching and observing Sarah with her meticulous and careful approach as she bathed the twins. As I type this during the early morning hours of Father’s Day, I feel tremendous love for the mother of our children, who has shaped me to be the best father I can hope to achieve! I look forward to the opportunity to have all five of us together today! #fathersday #twinslife #nicu #canon #5dmkiii

This is my new badge of honor, my bracelets representing the twins. #twinslife #nicu

This is my new badge of honor, my bracelets representing the twins. These are my tickets of entry into the NICU. At first, I found them completely annoying…getting in the way the first two days after George and Henry were born. Those first two days after birth, I found myself confined to the certain areas of the sixth floor at Greenville Memorial Hospital, then I decided to walk to get some coffee in the main cafeteria downstairs; and thats when I noticed something was happening. As I made my way off the elevator, I turned the corner into the main atrium and noticed something…people were looking at my bracelets. I wondered…what made these bracelets special. There are two white bracelets, one for each twin indicating I am the father of both George and Henry. Both had a special number on each of them. Then there is the purple bracelet, our entry ticket into the NICU. It also had special numbers for each of the boys. As I made my way to the front part of the cafeteria, I spotted the Starbucks on the other side. My mouth watered for a mocha, maybe today I will have two pumps of caramel. Then it happened, as I passed a table…someone said “Congratulations, twins? I hope everything is ok in the NICU.” I perked up and smiled and said thank you. It is almost father’s day and I am starting to get anxious. I am wondering, will I be able to have all my family in one place. Sarah, Rose, George, and Henry in one room. Rosebud does not have a special bracelet, she can only walk back with Sarah or I since we are the only two with these bracelets. Then, if she walks back to see the twins, she only can visit for no more than fifteen minutes. I am reminded of this sobering notion that life is in a whirlwind. As I get closer to Starbucks, another person smiles and says “Congrats, hope the twins are doing well!” I thought “yeah, thats me…father to two boys…twin boys!” My little badges of honor, my bracelets, my little family. It dawned on me…I do not want to cut these off. I think I will wear them until they fall off. #twinslife #nicu

Henry and I spent some time this morning…hanging out during his morning feeding. #twinslife #nicu

Henry and I spent some time this morning…hanging out during his morning feeding. He was really tired this morning, so I let him lay on my chest while getting his morning milk. I love listening to him breathe and sometimes make sounds like a little mouse. #twinslife #nicu

Here we are…day five for George and Henry in the NICU. #twinslife

Hello all…here is a quick update! I apologize for the length, but I thought most people would want to know how the twins are progressing. I am thankful to Julie Thome Pickett and her openness to share Sadie Margaret’s story, empowering me to share George and Henry’s story. I am also thankful to GHS’s Children’s Hospital and all the staff in the NICU!

Soon…soon is never really soon enough?!

Soon…soon is never really soon enough?! Soon with a question mark is actually more appropriate. You can add so much to the question: Soon? How soon? Soon, as in tomorrow, next week, next month? These are the questions we find ourselves asking. We use this word during each visit, ask a question using this word during each rounding, wonder this question while talking to family and friends. Soon has so many qualifiers in NICU2. When we received the call while driving to the GHS NICU for our first visit since Sarah’s discharge, we heard a few magic words…”George and Henry have been moved from NICU 1 to NICU 2.” We cried in jubilation. We celebrated a major milestone moving from a true ICU to a new place of new unknowns. We wondered, how soon? As I talked to my father on the phone, I found myself explaining…defining the word soon using a logical approach. I shared the information the doctors shared earlier that morning as we wondered the same questions. We learned about feeding volume, stomach capacity, body temperature, and the value of a baby making it past 38 weeks. We learned what it meant to truly be a premie, and how NICU2 is about transitioning our boys from premies to infants. Soon could mean two weeks…until they can sleep in their cribs at home. Soon could mean they can take a bottle for each feeding, every three hours for two days. Right now…soon seems so far away when George and Henry can only have one bottle a day. Soon…it seems so far away. Not just in time but geographical distance. Far enough away to make late night phone calls to the night nurse hoping for a positive report. Close enough to realize another family could benefit from your Ronald McDonald spot, putting nightly routines with Rosebud as a priority over proximity. Tough choices, decisions, hoping each decision will get us closer. Soon…when will it be here? Will I wish away the moments, slivers of time, ounces of seconds spent during their first bottles, first diaper change, the first time you learn how to change a onesie tangled in wires, iv lines, and feeding tubes. Soon is getting closer…but I am selfish, I want these cribs filled with George and Henry…soon.

Soon…soon is never really soon enough?! Soon with a question mark is actually more appropriate. You can add so much to the question:

Soon? How soon? Soon, as in tomorrow, next week, next month?
